One of the most remarkable late 18th century English portraits we’ve ever seen, this gorgeous sentimental piece holds a lock of the sitter’s hair at the reverse, and showcases one of my favorite moments in historical fashion- the Directoire Dishabille period. The design style takes its name from the period 1795–1799 when France was ruled by a government of Directors, and many examples of design from this period carried on a simplified Classicism of Louis XVI, incorporating many of the symbols of equality, fraternity and liberty associated with the Revolution.

Sensually depicted, our sitter’s gaze is set past the viewer with large blue eyes, pursing her lips as though she is about to comment on the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been enjoying. The background diffuses from a soft blue to a cream which encircles her head, creating a luminous halo affect. I would not be surprised if this piece was made for a dear female friend— as the piece benefits from a paste halo, and a diamond embellished bail which were more commonly gifted to women, as men received more understated designed portraits with a minimal frames.
