Tableau Brooch of Small French Village in 18k

Sale price Price $1,395.00 Regular price $1,995.00

Victorian jewelry is as complex in its symbolism, sentiment, and design as the fashion, architecture, and decor of the time. Worn as an ornament, a love token, or a remembrance, jewelry not only completed the well-dressed lady’s costume but also denoted her position in society, her marital status, and her sense of self.

To reflect cultural sophistication in the latter part of the 19th century, the Grand Tour was the standard European vacation for the upper classes. While traveling through Venice, Florence, and Rome, tourists bought these small jewelry souvenirs of their trip, the subject of which included ancient Roman architecture and pictorial scenes, flowers, animals, and birds.

A precious painting brooch featuring a painting of a small French hamlet, the scrolled frame of the brooch offers the onlooker a vision of home, even if traveling far far away. The pin back is in metal, the painting is a touch small for frame, see photos.
