Superb 19th C Citrine and Diamond Paste Earrings
Victorian jewelry is as complex in its symbolism, sentiment, and design as the fashion, architecture, and decor of the time. Worn as an ornament, a love token, or a remembrance, jewelry not only completed the well-dressed lady’s costume but also denoted her position in society, her marital status, and her sense of self.
For centuries, paste has made a more affordable jewelry option for those who could not pay for the luster of a diamond. In fact, many people desired paste jewelry in its own right. It was valued as its own art form, rather than simple imitation. The trend continued into the late 19th century, and even today we can find paste jewels.
Large champagne-toned citrine pastes sit between fanciful diamond paste bows to create a singular pair of late Victorian earrings. Meant to emulate Georgian frippery of the 18th century, these earrings deviate from mimicry with their belle epoque construction on the reverse, while the open back setting of the citrine paste echoes the lines of a cathedral window, a nod to both 19th-century gothic revival and forthcoming deco designs.
