Romantic 18K French Rococo Revival Painted Enamel Ring
This romantic French painted Rococo Revival ring is a really fantastic example. Rings like this were commonly made in the Napoleon III period that were reminiscent of what the French truly believed was the “Golden Period.” The upper class in France looked back at the early 18th century as their romanticized high point, and this is an excellent example of that. We see it in the costumes that are painted on the couple, one who is serenading the woman doing needlework. They look almost like they are as young as fourteen and that is a part of this infantilized aspect that we often see: young carefree days when love is first blooming. This is an excellent spring piece that would have been produced in the Napoleon II period as a fond looking back at earlier styles and forms of French jewelry and art.
