Outrageous Medusa Medallion Brooch
One of the best pieces of Grand Tour jewelry we’ve ever seen, this superb brooch featuring two snakes coiling around a bar that leads to a central shield. Firmly planted in the Archaeological revival movement, this piece pulls from the iconic 1597/1598 Caravaggio shield that was crafted for Cardinal DelMonte’s collection, which would have likely been on display at the Ufizzi during the 19th century.
This English piece is based on designs from that iconic work, but with a face more closely modeled from mosaics like this one from the Archaeological museum of Sousse, Tunesia, inclusive of the wings.
