Composed of a "starter" chain with verious gemstone "slides" added to ti, Victorian slide jewelry allowed women to customize to their liking, much like the charm bracelets of today. Common slides included stick pin heads, tiny lockets, buttons, and loosened gemstones. Additionally, Victorians loved using jewelry as symbolic sentiments and viewed pearls as a sign of purity. It was during this era that pearl jewelry became fashionable for brides, a tradition that continues to this day.

An outstanding pearl work necklace from the early Victorian period, circa 1845. Built from pearls of graduating sizes and shapes, carefully sewn onto a carved mother-of-pearl slide, crowning a twisting chain of extremely small pearls, this necklace is a masterpiece, down to the floral stationed 14ct barrel clasp.
