Following Prince Albert's passing, the Queen went into mourning and not only donned black attire and mourning jewelry, but she also required the court to do likewise. That same year brought the beginning of the American Civil War, so there was reason to mourn in both the United States and Great Britain. 

Since mourning required not only a change in clothes but a change in jewelry as well, the Grand Period became the high point of mourning jewelry. 

Religion, for example, was an important part of Victorian life, and cross pendants and necklaces made from materials such as metal, hair, and gemstones were common accouterments. Additionally, what better to style dark mourning clothing with complementary royal-esque jewelry that we see in this example. 

This stunning pearl and diamond cross pendant brings together any look. Set in 18k gold, this piece features twenty-seven beautifully set pearls, with the center one surrounded by a diamond halo.
